PCRRHS 2001 Convention

This year's Penn Central Railroad Historical Society convention was held from September 20-23 in Albany NY. Highlights of the trip included a tour of Albany's Amtrak station, the Amtrak shops, CSX's massive Selkirk Yard, and diesel shops, as well as the model railroad at the Rennselaer Polytechnical Institute.

These first few were all taken in and around Amtrak's diesel shops.

This is looking towards the shops from the edge of the Albany station. On the left are two of Amtrak's P32 "Genesis" units, one in the old scheme, and the rear one in the new paint. Straight ahead (with the lights on), and to the right are older EMD F40PHs. The yellow bars on the left guard a switch machine.
This F40 didn't like having its picture taken! It started rumbling, and blowing the air from its brake lines when our cameras started snapping!
Can anyone guess what this is? It's one of the engines from a Turboliner trainset. It's not very big... only about 4-5 feet long!
This is an Amfleet coach parked in the shops. I think these are the same ones that got pulled off the train that just came in. Anyway, it really isn't that dark in here. This place is quite large! The yellow railing to the left of the car protects a stairway leading to inspection pits under it. Eventually, I'll see if I can lighten this one up.
An EMD SW1500 bares its prime mover (diesel engine). You can just about see the holes in the side. These are normally covered...but have been removed during this engine's shopping.
On the next track, is a Turboliner. This is one of the Rohr-built Turbos. Since some of the older ones have been rebuilt, I can't tell how old this one is! My camera has been reflected off the reflective striping on this unit.
When I first saw this, I thought it was an electric traction motor. But, it might be a generator that just came in from EMD. Traction motors are much bigger!
Ever wonder what the 'dashboard' of a locomotive looks like? This is the control panel for an EMD F40PH passenger locomotive. Even got to sit behind the controls on this one!
This is part of the diesel engine inside an EMD F40PH. I think this is a 3,000-horse V16...but I can't remember! This is the same engine that I got to sit in earlier.
These are two of the last six remaining EMD FL9s on Amtrak. The other four are in Wilmington. They were built in the late 1950s-early 1960s for the New Haven Railroad. These are unique in that they can run on either their diesel engines... or electrified third rail! NH had them built to eliminate engine changes outside major terminals, such as NYC's Penn Station. All have seen service under NH, Penn Central, Conrail, and now Amtrak.
Here I am, posing with an FL9 outside the Albany Amtrak shops.
This F40 was in a wreck near Syracuse awhile back. This engine is completely screwed up. Not only is the nose bashed in, but it's leaking fluid, and has *lots* of broken wires hanging down.
