Waynesburg & Washington RR #4

Had to start a second page :)

The sign on the front of the enginehouse. In the winter, the entire front of the shed is covered with steel plates to keep the weather out. Still doesn't keep the engine from getting dirty, though.
I actually got to drive this engine later! It's a Plymouth (not related to the car company) diesel engine that the county bought (from a steel mill) to shuffle W&W #4 in and out of the enginehouse. It's powered by a 6-cylinder engine. No traction motors here! Drive to the wheels uses a system of cogs and chains. It's like driving a big truck.
Rear view of the diesels. Notice that they don't have couplers! The connection between them is made with a drawbar. It's crude, but it works. The original orange paint is starting to appear above the windshield on one of the units.
These are the control levers in the Plymouth diesel. The large lever is the handbrake. The bent lever is the throttle. There's also a foot brake on the floor. In front of the levers, are a set of guages.
A close up of the control panel. The large black cylinder is the fuel tank. Off to the left, are the car batteries that are used to start the engine. These batteries are removed after the engine is parked for the night.
This is the engine on display outside the enginehouse...on the day of the Festival. The headlight, bell, and numberplate have been cleaned and added. The two white flags on the smokebox signify the train's class. White flags state that this train would be an 'extra,' that is, one without a regular schedule.
Front end of the dead diesel. It's permanently attached to the other one. The drawbar at the front is secured by a large bolt. Notice the grille over the radiator... and the exhaust pipe sticking out of the hood!
A close-up of the brake handle. To use it, you squeeze the handle ends together.
Engine was pulled outside for cleaning. This is before we washed it down. It's painted for the PRR on one side, and W&W on the other.
Engine is on display at the Harvest Festival. Thought I'd include a pic of the 'other' side :P
